Roadside shootout shocks motorists as gun buybust goes south, three wounded

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – A police corporal and two suspected gunrunners, all of them wounded, were rushed to the hospital after a roadside scuffle for a pistol in broad daylight that shocked some motorists here on a holiday.

The city police Station 6 reported Rey Silvestre, assigned to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group here was wounded inside a parked SUV when the gun that he and the two suspected criminals went off as they grappled for it near noontime along the Carlos Hilado Highway or the Circumferential Road.

The road is a major bypass away from the city center and is usually busy.

“I was shocked to see three people scuffling inside a Montero then I heard what sounded like a gunshot,” a motorcycle rider told DNX.

He said it was near noon when he passed along the portion of the highway where the SUV was parked.

Silvestre posed as a buyer of the pistol, a 45 caliber Armscor, from Michael Bintoroso, 44, of San Carlos City; and Alex Vilega, 33, of Pahanocoy village here.

The two are suspects in running an illegal gun trade.
