Mistaken Identity? Child slain in Vista Alegre shooting

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – Joel Bayotas, 14, was at home with his sister when shots rang out in the evening of Thursday night, 23 June 2020.

Accounts pieced together by police probers from relatives and neighbors showed Joel ran outside.

There, the killers shot at him again.

His mother told DNX the sounds of gunfire she heard lasted about 10 minutes with short lulls in between

Bayotas sustained a gunshot wound which killed him soon after.

Police Station 7 Commander Police Captain Elmer Bonilla said the police are looking into the victim’s family history since his father was a drug convict and his uncle just finished serving time for a murder case.

The police captain added that the child may have been mistaken for his uncle who is being pursued by his enemies.

The police is currently eyeing five possible suspects based on the CCTV footage during the night of the incident.

Rachele Bandiola, the victim’s mother, thought that the boy was staying at her eldest daughter’s house sleeping.

His death marks the third teenage killing and the eleventh shooting incident in the lone district.
