Tiempo muerto combat: Reds, soldiers clash again in Negros countrysides, sixth in recent weeks

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – Communist guerrillas clashed anew in the countrysides here as the dead season sets in over the sugar industry and as the campaign for the 2022 polls winds down to its last two weeks.

The Army’s 3rd Infantry Division reported the latest field fighting was in the upland village of Sandayao in Guihulngan, a city in Oriental Negros, around 120 kilometers north of here.

The 15-minute gunbattle between troops of the 62nd IB, a maneuver battallion and suspected fighters of the New People’s Army took place in the hinterland community of Halog yesterday, 21 April 2022.

A news release from 3rd ID spokesman, Capt. Kim Apitong, said two rebels might have been wounded based on bloodstains found in the area surrounding the encounter site.

No soldier was reportedly killed or wounded.

Soldiers found some weapons including a KG9 sub-machine gun and R4 carbines believed to have been left behind by the fleeing rebels.

Lieutenant Colonel William C Pesase Jr, 62nd IB commander, thanked residents for giving them information on the rebels as he assured villagers they will tcontinue their pursuit operations against the NPA to pre-empt their extortion activity and terroristic acts in the area.
