BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – At least 10 large villages here near the center went under water today as torrential rains brought by a storm pounded this highly-urbanized provincial center of more than half a million people since last night, 27 August 2023.

City disaster czar Anna Maria Laarni Pornan told DNX the intense rains have led rivers to rise in the southern part once more, similar to the flooding last month.

Pornan, who heads the Risk Reduction Management Office here, said the affected villages included coastal ones like Punta Taytay, Sum-ag, Pahanocoy and Singcang Airport, and farming villages like Cabug, Handumanan, and Felisa.

Those affected nearer to the proper here are Barangay 40, and Mandalagan in the north.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez has yet to issue a statement on the first massive flooding reported this month as a storm, Goring, was moving across the country.

DNX has sought for a statement from the city’s Information Office but there has been no response yet as this story goes to press.
