BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte said the revival of the country’s economy must be a top priority post the 2022 polls.

This came as presidential candidate Ferdinand Marcos Jr met with sugar industry leaders to consult with them on how to solve the woes of the island’s monocrop economy.

“He wanted to hear it from those in the industry themselves but whatever solutions he has cannot be implemented unless he and Sara win,” Negros Occidental Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer said.

Duterte, the vice presidential candidate of former Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr, told local officials in a brief meeting with local officials here that the economy needs to be restored to pre-pandemic levels.

She pointed out that quality education must be implemented to improve the economy.

Duterte said the current state of education is not that good.

Meanwhile, senatorial hopeful lawyer Larry Gadon said the entire agriculture sector and not only the sugar industry needs to get subsidies from government as fertilizer prices climb.

He said the entire sector and not only sugar needs to be subsidized as fertilizer prices early this year have more than doubled compared to 2021.
