BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines — The price of pork has the highest spike since the year started, until it settled on its prevailing price of P220 per kilo by May, the report from the Price Monitoring Unit under the City Mayor’s Office reveals.
The report was based from the prevailing price, or the prevalent or most common price among five vendors surveyed in Libertad South Public Market.
According to the report, pork (meat with bones, and lean meat) started with a prevailing price of P200 per kilo last January, before settling to P220 per kilo prevailing price by May.
The price monitoring report reveals that the P20 spike in the meat product started 20 March, or the end of the third week monitoring. It can be noted that the General Community Quarantine of the city was declared 16 March.
Price difference among vendors had also stayed within the P10 limit from January to middle of March. Since the end of March through May, however, there is no difference in the price of the meat among those surveyed.
Meanwhile, the price of liempo had remained at the prevailing price of P230 since January.
The prevailing price of lean beef, meanwhile, had a spike of P10 from start of the year to May. From a prevailing price of P260 per kilo among those surveyed to a prevailing price of P270 per kilo by May.
The spike in the price of beef, according to the monitoring report, started on the second week April. It could be noted that this coincides as well with the city under Enhanced Community Quarantine at that time.
The price of lean beef also varied among vendors surveyed from start of monitoring until May. For January, lean beef was sold for as low as P250 per kilo, to as high as P270 per kilo.
By April, however, the price difference was slimmer, with one vendor selling it as low as P270 per kilo, and another at P280 per kilo.
Meanwhile, chicken was the only meat whose price went down during the five-month monitoring. At the start of the monitoring period on January, chicken was sold at P152.6 per kilo but dropped to P150 by May, the market survey among the vendors showed.
Among the meat products surveyed, chicken also had the biggest price difference among the vendors surveyed. Last January, chicken at Libertad Market was sold for as low as P138 per kilo to as high as P170 per kilo, or a difference of P32.
Only two vendors were surveyed by May, however. Both sold chicken at only P150 per kilo.
The prevailing price for eggs also dropped from P7.25 in January, P7 by May.
