President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday, 3 December, signed into law a bill postponing the barangay and SK elections from 11 May 2020 to 5 December 2022.

This will give the incumbent barangay officials an additional two years in position.

Gonzales-Pallen said the delay of the barangay and SK elections will be an advantage to those villages having working officials.

“The postponement of the election will give those working officials ample time to implement their three- to five-year development plan,” she said.

Gonzales-Pallen, meanwhile, said those non-working officials should use the extension of their terms as an opportunity to make up for the services they have not given to their constituents.

“The delay will be a disadvantage to those villages with officials who are not serving their constituents well. They should prove their constituents that they are worthy to stay in their positions,” she added.

Under the said law, the elected barangay and SK officials in 2022 election will assume office on 1 January 2023.

The last barangay and SK elections were held in May 2018.
