BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – Police has confirmed the death of a child, 12, in Escalante, a city 94 kilometers north of here as the tiempo muerto or the dead season in the sugar industry starts.
Police prober Alberto De La Cruz Jr. identified the victim as Reylan Amacan, who was hit by a truck driven by Harim Marquez, 40, in Tanquinto, a sub village of Jonob-jonob village around 9am today, 2 June 2002.
Harim was driving a truck to Buenavista when Amacan suddenly crossed the pedestrian lane carrying cut bamboo.
The initial investigation showed Marquez tried to stop the truck by hitting the brakes as shown by skid marks on the road.
Tiempo muerto is the season between the planting and milling of sugarcane in the island that largely depends on the monocrop industry for its income.
