The new Novel Coronavirus is a tricky virus.
It doesn’t kill a victim immediately but will slowly weaken the body by causing infections leading to severe pneumonia.
The Wuhan resident who was recorded to be the first death of a person with nCoV in the Philippines, the first outside China was reported to have died due to the same complication – severe pneumonia.
Physician Julius Drilon, chief of the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital told DNX it is a misconception that the virus can kill immediately.
He also pointed out the nCov has a low fatality rate of two percent compared to other corona strains.
This means out of 100 people who get infected, two die.
The symptoms are common including fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some confirmed patients who acquired the virus showed little symptoms while others are severely ill and almost dying.
Symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 days after exposure.
If someone shows the same symptoms and has a travel history in China and its neighboring countries, it is best to seek for a professional help immediately.
During the first outbreak in China, the patients who were positive of the virus were linked to a large seafood and live animal market in Wuhan.
It was soon discovered that many other patients were not exposed in the market, indicating person-to-person spread.
Currently, there are 24,553 cases and 492 deaths, worldwide.
