Northern Negros residents return home after New Year’s day flash floods

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – Thousands of residents in the northern part of the province have returned home after the New Year’s day flash flood that hit three cities and one town in the Third District of Negros Occidental.

The heavy rains in the early hours on Friday 1 January affected cities of Victorias, Silay, Talisay and town of EB Magalona.

Provincial Disaster Management and Prevention Department (PDMPD) head Zaephard Caelian said Victorias City was badly hit by the flooding, with 8,976 families affected, 37 washed out or destroyed houses, 127 damaged houses and one death recorded.

In Talisay City, records from PDMPD showed 4,593 families in 16 villages were affected with 19 houses destroyed and 59 damaged.

It reported that the wall of Inocencio V Ferrer School of Fisheries and the riprap in Zone 3 village collapsed.

Four pump boats there were also damaged.

Meanwhile, in Silay City, 1, 849 families and 5, 718 individuals in 13 villages were affected with 19 destroyed and 193 damaged houses.

The Silay City hacienda Malisbog Pulo Bridge was also reported as impassable.

EB Magalona town has yet to submit its report on the damage caused by the floods.
