NegOcc, Bacolod officials call for calm, vigilance as Philippines confirms first coronavirus case

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Officials here and of Negros Occidental province called for calm, vigilance, and precaution after Health Sec. Francisco Duque III confirmed the first 2019 N coronavirus case in the country.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia told DNX from Manila, where he is attending a meeting of the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council, that city residents must remain calm.

“We are prepared, steps will be taken by your city government,” Leonardia said.

Lone District Cong. Greg Gasataya, for his part, called for precautionary measures, a call similar to that of Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran.

“We need to be prepared to avoid the spread of this virus,” Gasataya told DNX.

Familiaran, on the other hand, reminded residents about a few basics such as right handwashing and taking of Vitamin C supplements.

He also advised people to avoid crowded areas and isolate themselves if they are sick or wear surgical masks.

As to quarantine, Familiaran said it is up to the bureau handling it to check seaports and airports.

City disaster chief Joemarie Vargas, on the other hand, said a system is already in place for the transport and confinement of suspected cases.

At the Capitol, Vice-Governor Jeffrey Ferrer told DNX there are already measures prepared by the provincial government.

He, however, appealed to Negrosanons to observe proper hygiene.
