Part II: The Eric Alcosaba saga

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – If you are off the beaten path and you suddenly meet Eric Alcosaba, you better be careful.

Or pray.

Presuming you see him first.

A week after the patrolman who jumped his assignment to Mindanao was slain on a busy highway in Bacolod City, friends and foes have now started to offer to DNX sketches of the slain policeman’s life.

The narrative above came from a self-described operator who said he had worked with Alcosaba on several “projects” that he refused to specify.

“Those were all tactical arrangements,” the source said.

“Projects” could mean a lot of things – that can run the full range of extremes – from the legitimate or anti-drug operations of the City Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force, Alcosaba’s assignment prior to his deployment in Police Station 7, to the “grey” or outright “black” operations. The source said “black ops” could include extra-legal or illegal activities like “taking out” or killing high-value targets like druglords or even their protectors in uniform, corrupt policemen.

The source was specific in describing the targets, the word “suspected” was not used.

Alcosaba was implicated in 2017 March by Ricky Serenio, a confessed member of the Berya drug syndicate.

Serenio made the supplemental affidavit months after he issued his first in January of that year.

September last year, three killers ambushed Serenio on a busy highway in Pahanocoy, a southern village here.

The killing, like that of Alcosaba, was public and brutal.

Both happened at almost the same time.

Around 3:30pm.

When the road is busy.

It is not known who killed Serenio.

Police caught two “persons of interest” who were later released.

A case of mistaken identity, they said.

Who killed Ricky Serenio?

Who killed Eric Alcosaba?

What connects the two murders?
