BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – The Commission on Elections has set the start of election period on 9 January 2022, five months before the voting period on May.
COMELEC Bacolod elections officer, lawyer Kathrina Triño Caña said that during the period, her office will implement gun bans and checkpoints in coordination with the local police.
Caña also stressed that they have no jurisdiction as of the moment over campaign materials posted by candidates.
The Comelec will have the authority over these materials during the campaign period which will start March 28.
Even if election period is about to start, it is during the campaign period that their office will implement “Operation Baklas”, or the tearing down of illegally posted campaign materials not posted in designated Comelec sites.
Caña added that before campaign period starts, those considered as illegal campaign materials will be torn down.
