Step 1 for Patient 1: Contact tracing in Dumaguete City, Philippines

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – The local government of Dumaguete in Oriental Negros province, Philippines will trace the persons a Chinese woman from Wuhan came in contact with when she visited the university city.

Diaster chief Rizal Benatiro told DNX this would be their first step after the city disaster council convenes following the announcement yesterday of Health Sec. Francisco Duque III that the first confirmed infection of the 2019 nCoronavirus in the Philippines is a 38-year-old Chinese woman who had traveled to Dumaguete and Cebu City, located across Negros island.

Duque added the woman is now confined in a government hospital in the Philippine capital.

Benatiro said except for the details Duque had disclosed, they have yet to gather data on the woman’s arrival and stay in Dumaguete.

Last year, the Philippine Retirement Authority had named Dumaguete as the best retirement haven in the Philippines.

It is located around 280 kilometers from here by land transport.

Cebu, on the other hand, can be reached from Dumaguete by ferry boat.

Benatiro advised city residents to observe universal precautionary measures like handwashing, avoiding crowded areas, isolating oneself when sick and going to the doctor for a check up when one has a flu or cough.
