BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines — A heritage advocate here had sought the help of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines for the possible preservation of the pre-World War II bridge in Talave River.
Heritage advocate Andoni Llantada Valencia told DNX he had sent a letter to the NHCP Chairman Emmanuel Calairo asking the latter to preserve and “save from destruction” the bridge which was made by an American steel corporation.
The steel bridge, which connects the city of San Carlos and the municipality of Calatrava, is in danger of being destroyed because of a project by the Department of Public Works and Highways.
The DPWH, according to Valencia, has built a new concrete bridge in the area. Valencia said the “ignorance”of DPWH about the historical significance of the bridge might lead to its destruction.
Valencia has furnished a copy of his letter to Calatrava Mayor Marilyn Era as well as to the DPWH Region VI.
DPWH Director Randy Del Rosario od the Stakeholders Relations Service has also endorsed Valencia’s lettee to DPWH Region VI.
Valencia, as of press time, is waiting for a response from the NHCP and the DPWH Region VI over his protest.
