Reds, soldiers clash anew in Guihulngan City, Army reports one rebel killed

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – The New People’s Army suffered yet another battlefield loss today, 20 July 2022, when its guerrillas clashed anew with soldiers of the 62nd Infantry Battalion in the Oriental Negros city of Guihulngan, about 100 kilometers from here.

Camp Gerona reported the 8am clash in the upland community of Taluktok in Sandayao village came after residents informed soldiers of the 62nd Infantry Battalion that there were rebels in the area.

Brigadier General Innocencio Pasaporte told DNX the soldiers clashed briefly with at least five suspected rebels.

The 62nd’s information officer, Lt. Joy De Guzman, said the soldiers were members of the Mobile Community Support Sustainment Teams.

Soldiers found the body of a man, believed to be a rebel, at the clash site and also seized a machine pistol, a gun and explosives.

De Guzman added the body was identified to be that of Pompeo D Landes a, 56, a Sandayao resident who was allegedly involved in a murder and illegal gun cases.

Today’s clash came more than a year after the first reported encounter in March last year that led to the death of at least 10 rebels.
