A treat for skywatchers.

Something rare and beautiful is happening if you know where to look, and when to look.

The Wolf Moon (or the January full moon) will be glimpsed in the skies which would coincide with the penumbral eclipse — both firsts in the year.

The naming of the moon dates back to the Native Americans’ habit of naming the celestial body according to common features they had observed while tracking the seasons in the Northern Hemisphere.

Thus the term Wolf Moon to name the January full moon in reference to the howling wolves usually heard during that time.

Wolves, according to observation, howl more during the winter times to define territory, or gather their pack to hunt.

When is the Wolf Moon?

The full moon of January, called the Wolf Moon, will occur on the 10th at 19:21 GMT (or 3:21 am Philippine time the next day).

It will coincide with a penumbral lunar eclipse that will be seen over Asia, Australia, Europe, and Africa.
