He is no shrinking violet.
In fact, there are no better words to describe him than the ones he gave for himself in his Facebook account: FIERCE, AND FABULOUS.
Jet Salcedo is arguably one of the most recognized names in the entertainment industry and the designing world. Ask any ordinary man-on-the-street, or any local fashion aficionado and his name would almost always crop up.
He is unabashed, larger-than-life, and yes, FABULOUS.
And that indefatigable spirit inevitably spills over Jet Salcedo’s creations. His creations are like little black dresses gone bad – and by bad we mean rebellious, defiant, extraordinary, unapologetically bold. There’s a merging of bold designs and colors, style and creativity, a celebration of both form (artistry is unmistakable) and function (very important – wearability, something that European designers often take for granted).
His works exude the exuberance of rococo meeting baroque meeting Coco Chanel – and running away with the entire runway in style.
It’s a seamless merging of man and creation.
Jet LIVES fashion. In fact, before he became THE Jet Salcedo we know now, the artist had already been studying the arts, having taken up and actually graduated fashion design from the School of Fashion and the Arts in 2012 and then became president of the Iloilo Young Designers Council for three years since 2015.
His designs have already crossed borders, with Miss Haiti actually wearing the designer’s creation in the 2017 Miss Universe pageant. Just this year, Jet also represented the Philippines in Asia Fashion Week in Malaysia and won the award for Best Designer Showcase.
And he is multi-talented too.
“I have been a designer for a decade now, but I wouldn’t actually call myself a designer because I am a multi-faceted artist,” he tells DNX. Did we say he lives fashion? No, scratch that. We say he BREATHES fashion.
It’s not just the clothes. The mega-hyphenate does almost anything related to fashion: hair and make-up, styling, and even making accessories.
Jet has been in the industry for all of 10 years, but his career has just barely scratched the surface of what he can do.
His star has nowhere else to go but up.
It is a given then that Jet will be among those featured during the Born Brave fashion show on October 12 at the SMX Convention Bacolod.
The event, directed by Rodney Ascalon, is in collaboration with the office of Bacolod representative Cong. Greg Gasataya, the avowed champion for mental health. Proceeds of the benefit show will go to Youth for Mental Health – Bacolod Chapter, and Happy Hearts Foundation.
“I joined Born Brave because I want my artistry to transcend my compassion for people who suffer from (a) mental health [disorder],” he says. The advocacy is also somewhat personal to him, as he confesses that he has relatives who are also undergoing mental health issues.
Born Brave, he says, is a perfect opportunity for him to “give back to the society”.
