BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – The newly-replaced and widened Magsungay bridge at Lacson Extension leading to the Murcia- Alijis road is seen to “improve traffic flow in the city,” said Mayor Evelio Leonardia.
On Tuesday 8 December, city officials inaugurated the 4-lane bridge that connects Downtown Bacolod to villages Alijis, Tangub, Pahanocoy, Cabug, Sum-ag, Mansilingan, and Handumanan,
Leonardia said the new 4-lane bridge is strategically located that it will have a significant impact on the traffic and development of Bacolod.
“And as this connects to the other newly widened bridge crossing the Lupit river near the San Antonio Abad Parish Church, its traffic impact in this extremely busy road network is going to be very significant,” he added.
The rehabilitation project included replacing the original steel bridge with this 4-lane concrete bridge, drainage installation with sidewalks, riprapping part of the riverbank for flood control mitigation, and the construction and widening of the road from the bridge – from 2 lanes to 4 lanes — all the way to Magsaysay Avenue.
The said bridge was one of the major infrastructure projects funded by the loan of the city government with the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP).
“With the DBP loan, we will have more projects. And more projects mean more jobs, and more economic stimulation. It will be one of the factors to revive the local economy,” the mayor said.
