BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – Southern parts of this highly-urbanized provincial center went under water as Super Typhoon Egay dumped monsoon rains over the Visayas and caused rivers and waterways to swell here and forcing at least 1,569 people to flee their homes and the opening of 19 evacuation centers in 14 barangays.
City disaster chief Anna Maria Laarni Pornan told DNX torrential rains brought by the southwest monsoon stirred by Egay dumped rain equivalent to five to six days in only several hours since last night.
Some waterways like Mambuloc Creek, Lupit and Magsungay Rivers reached critical levels and raised floodwaters causing the evacuation of 404 families in 14 barangays or residential areas.
Egay, however, which was reclassified as a super typhoon only this morning, 25 July 2023, was lashing northern Luzon when rains were falling over here.
Netizens sent DNX videos showing floodwaters ennterimg homes in Singcamg, Pahanocoy, and Tangub villages, all in the southern part of thus city.
The Amity Volunteer Fire Brigade had to go on a rescue operation around noontime today to save residents who were stranded along Araneta Street, a major thouroughfare, in front of popular mall Gaisano City.
