BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – Leonilo Borbon had just eaten. He could have had coffee, perhaps a bowl of instant noodles, an early morning breakfast after a night of driving a taxicab.

It was his last meal.

Leonilo, 58, was supposed to go home to Sum-ag village but as he crossed Araneta Street to get to his taxi parked just across across, inside the Goldenfields Commercial Complex, he was hit by a speeding car.

Miguel Jomari Gialogo was hungry after a night of drinking. He had just woken up and took to the road from his home in Tangub village to look for food.

Accounts pieced together by Police Station 8 showed how a tragedy, a road accident led to the death of a breadwinner who met his death on the streets, the very same place where he lived off.

“He was already near the side of the road,” Police Major Joery Puerto told DNX about Borbon who was hit by Gialogo’s car around 3:45am, according to the police blotter.

Puerto, who heads Station 8 that was supposed to probe the incident, said Gialogo did not appear drunk when he was brought in for detention.

He said Gialogo, a Medical Technology student in a local university here, said he did not notice that he had hit a man until five kilometers later.

The facts outlined by Puerto showed Gialogo was facing north from Tangub village when he hit Borbon who was to his right side.

“He did not notice that he hit him,” Puerto said, recounting what Gialogo said at the police station.

Photos of the brown Suzuki Ertiga impounded outside Station 8 showed a a badly damaged hood and front grille.

The hood had a large indentation on its right side that seems to have been caused by a heavy object.

On that side, the windshield had a hole, the safety glass appearing punctured by a large round object.

Gialogo refused to be interviewed when requested by DNX at the police station. He refused all interviews.

Puerto said Gialogo noticed that he had hit a man after only about five kilometers later, at a gasoline station in the northern side of the city.

The police probe showed the body of Borbon was slumped all along on the dented hood as he made his escape.

Puerto it is unlikely that Gialogo did not see Borbon’s body slumped on his hood.

Or did not notice he had hit a man.

“It could have been the fear that made him flee,” Puerto said.
