Western Visayas logs two cases of Centaurus Variant, the first two in the Philippines, according to Department of Health (DOH) Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire.

Centaurus or BA.2.75 subvariant of the COVID-19 Omicron variant was initially discovered in India. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on 7 July 2022 classified it as a “variant under monitoring”.

Physician Grace Tan, head of the Environmental Sanitation Division of the Bacolod Health Office said that the sub-variant was a result of mutation that can either become weakened, or evolve even stronger and more transmissible.

The physician identifies “incomplete eradication” as one of the factors that the virus mutated.

Bacolod City logs 22 new cases for 4 August 2022 with three individuals reinfected with the virus according to Rodolfo A. Jamora Jr., the Deputy of Operations of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO).

Thirty four additional cases for 3 August 2022 brings the total to 41,823 from 27 March 2020, as reported by the Negros Occidental Province Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC).

Tan said that washing of hands, wearing of face masks, and boosting the immune system are among the means to be protected from the virus regardless of the variant.
