BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – A crime of passion that left a woman dead, stabbed 55 times, a broad daylight abduction, and a first-ever exchange on an issue by contenders for the mayoral post here marked this month’s third week.

As temperatures soar early after the cold Yuletide months, the anticipated battle royale is heating up as sitting Mayor Evelio Leonardia and former Third District Cong Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez exchange claims and counterclaims over the issue of garbage management here.

Benitez claimed earlier in a virtual debate that only he attended that the local government here did not take part in a program for solid waste management in 2016 when he was still a solon of the Third District, a political subdivision that covers the neighboring cities of Talisay and Silay.

While Benitez did not name Leonardia, City Hall countered with a news release through the Public Information Office that Benitez was alluding to Leonardia and cited a nine point reply from the city administrator.

As the political cauldron starts to simmer here, several kilometers to the south in the neighboring city of Bago, police reported an abduction in broad daylight Thursday in Abuanan village.

The police said the victim, Johnson Garfil was cruising along the road in Abuanan when two motorcycle riders boxed him into the roadside and forced him into a white van.

Bago police chief, Captain Joem Malong, told DNX the initial probe showed Garfil was facing a charge for rape but he added the killing could also be related to a debt incurred by the victim.

Farther south, in typhoon stricken Sipalay City, the jilted lover of a former domestic helper allegedly murdered her by stabbing.

Not just once but 55 times.

Jhundad Sase, however, refused to answer the claims against him that he killed his common law wife Erlinda Petua after a heated argument during which Sase made Erlinda choose who to go with, him or her Indian chatmate.

She chose the foreigner.

Sase reportedly flew into a rage and allegedly killed Petua.

Here is a video of the suspect inside the Sipalay City Police Office detention cell.
