BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – This sugar-producing capital of the Philippines has topped the list of provinces in Western Visayas region for having the most dengue fever cases as of the third week last month.

The Western Visayas office of the Department of Health cited its 21 May 2022 records showing Negros Occidental with 40 villages with clustered dengue cases, followed by Antique with 23, Bacolod City and Iloilo province (five each), Capiz (2), and Iloilo City and Aklan (one each).

The report added Himamaylan and Kabankalan, neighboring cities in the south of the province, had the most number of villages with clustering of cases.

These are the villages of Carabalan (17 cases), Libacao (7), Aguisan (6), IV in the city proper (6), and II, also in the city proper (3).

In Kabankalan, these villages are Camingawan (5), Salong (5), 1 in the city proper (4), Hilamonan (3), Tagoc (3), and Talubangi (3).

Himamaylan Health Officer Medardo Estanda, however, said the local cases appear sporadic based on their checking.

This means that there is really no clustering of cases and some of those infected could have gotten the virus from other places.

Dengue is an illness caused by a virus that is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito species – aedes albopictus or aedes aegypti.
