Collaborative tools boost office productivity as well as leverage the platforms to push organizations to adopt the process quickly.

For those who do not know it yet, Sir Tim Berners-Lee is the author and creator of the World Wide Web.

In the early ’90s, he proposed the global hypertext project designed to allow users to work together in a web of hypertext documents.

He wrote the first World Wide Web which ran in the NeXTStep environment, while others became internet famous and billionaires like Google duo Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Mark Zuckerberg from Facebook, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Jack Ma of Alibaba, and many to mention.

As of now, we are moving to the next level of technology services from on-premise to cloud which elevates internet connectivity to the next level.

Internet users like you and me are freaked out about how the tech giants handle our data.

Fact is, advertising companies collected our data, sold and used it for many years in the research industry without our knowledge.

Today’s data breaches can impact hundreds of thousands of leaked or altered information online.

That is why many people have trust issues after the exposure of data and management practices.

The biggest scandal of Facebook was during the US presidential elections when millions of data from its users were harvested, leading to legal actions.

“We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you. I’ve been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to step up and do it,” Mark Zuckerberg had said in a statement.

On the other hand, Mozilla is asking this tech company specifically Facebook to change its app permissions and to make sure the user’s data is protected.

“Facebook’s current app permissions leave billions of its users vulnerable without them knowing it. If you play games, read news or take quizzes on Facebook, chances are you are doing those activities through third-party apps and not through Facebook itself. The default permissions that Facebook give to those third parties currently include data from your education and work, current city, and posts on your timeline. We are asking Facebook to change its policies to ensure third parties can’t access the information of the friends of people who use an app,” according to Ashley Boyd, VP Advocacy, Mozilla.

Mozilla, the Firefox maker, developed an add-on called Facebook Container that prevents tracking and helps you control your activity from Facebook.

Roadmap to build a better Web

The creator of the World Wide Web created a startup company built on top of an open-source project called “Inrupt“, a solid privacy platform that helps organizations build applications where users are in control of their information.

“The web was always meant to be a platform for creativity, collaboration, and free invention but that’s not what we are seeing today,” he said.

The project Solid will ensure that the development team will use the same methodologies and standardization approach in building websites or applications that will run in any browser.

What is the idea behind the project Solid?

The users can control all the data they have in online storage called “PODS”.

The Solid Server manages the Personal Online Data Stores entities while the developers can create applications using an SDK.

To access the data, you need to do particular permissions.

So it is up to the user of the application who will access his or her information while the application owner has to ask the permission of the user first for permissions under what conditions stated.

With user permission, these applications can access stores of data from any Personal Online Data Stores.

Before the pandemic hits 2020, Tim Berners-Lee asked the support from the government and companies to promote a more transparent and healthy internet.

“The power of the web to transform people’s lives, enrich society, and reduce inequality is one of the defining opportunities of our time. But, if we don’t act now and act together to prevent the web being misused by those who want to exploit, divide and undermine, we are at risk of squandering that potential,” he added.

As of now, many companies signed a contract with them including Britain’s National Health Service and the government of Flanders in Belgium as pilot customers according to John Bruce the CEO of the company.

The main goal of this project is to help the developers create software applications for the platform and protect the pieces of information of its users at the same time.
