BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – “I called him the other night and he did not reply,” City Administrator Em Ang said about her last attempt to wish Councilor Elmer Sy well.

Ang, a councilor for several terms who ran and won like Sy under the local Grupo Progreso (Group for Progress) party, remembers Sy as a” silent worker” who talks less but “does more.”

Most of all, “you can feel his sincerity,” Ang added about Sy whose death came on the day flags here are being flown at half mast for the death of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

Sy, 66, was one of the post Martial Law councilors here who joined politics after the 1986 EDSA People Power revolt.

Doctors in a private hospital here called his time of death around noontime, several hours after he flatlined this morning but doctors were able to revive him.

One of the DNX sources who is close to the family said Sy was hooked to a life-support machine.

REMEMBERING ELMER

Councilor Archie Baribar said he will always remember the late councilor as one of his closest allies in the councilor.

Baribar told DNX that he believed that “nobody can follow” in Sy’s footsteps.

The councilor called Sy “the inimitable” who would take up all of two minutes in campaign rallies.

The late councilor’s tagline had been “less talk, more action” but now had “ceased to talk, will miss his actions”.

Sangguniang Kabataan President and city Councilor Ayesha Joy Villaflor on the other hand said she will always remember Sy’s kindness and passion to help others.

She, like Baribar, also observed that Sy had always talked less, but had more action.

“He is one of the councilors that I really looked up to; his kindness and passion to public service despite his condition inspire me the most,” Villaflor told DNX, calling the late councilor “a hardworking and compassionate leader”.

“We will surely miss him,” she said as she sent words of comfort and condolences to the family of the councilor.
