Army, PNP nab four suspected high-ranking Reds

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – A joint operation of Army and National Police yesterday in upland Kabankalan City led to the arrest of four suspected high-ranking members of the New People’s Army and seized, among others, cash amounting to close to P120,000.

The Army’s 3rd Infantry Division reported that the four alleged Communist party cadres were arrested in a joint operation of the 15th Infantry Battalion and the police in the sub-village of Mamposo, Magballo village, more than 100 kilometers away from this urban center.

The Army news release identified those arrested as “Emmylo Cañares alias Sid/Drey, 38 years old, a resident of South Poblacion, San Fernando, Cebu, a former Finance (sic) of Bohol Party Committee, and the current Secretary of the Second National Urban Center Party Committee (2NUCPC); George Buga-ay alias Samantha/Alexa, 42 years old, a resident of Brgy Orong, Kabankalan City, a former squad leader and Finance Logistics Officer of the Regional Strike Forces (RSF) of Kilusang Rehiyon Negros (KR-N), former Secretary-General PAMALAKAYA Negros and is currently the Regional Communication (RCOM) of KR-N;

Relyn Moreno alias Sam, 22 years old, a resident t of Brgy Orong, Kabankalan City who is currently a Regional Communication (RCOM) staff of KR-N; and, Raffy Patajo alias Paolo, 21 years old, a resident of Sitio Montelo, Brgy Pinggot, Ilog, a former Squad Finance Logistic Officer (FLO) of Platoon 3 and Squad leader of Platoon 2, South West Front, KR-N and a Regional Communication Staff of KR-N.”

The Army added the operation came after a joint intelligence operations on the heels of the 8 July encounter in Pinggot village, Ilog town.

Operatives seized the alleged illegally-possessed firearms and explosives: one caliber .45 pistol; one .38 caliber revolver loaded with five ammunitions; and four hand grenades.

“Their arrest is a major setback to the CPP-NPA-NDF terrorist operating in the area of Negros Island and a victory of the government’s anti-terrorism drive. In coordination with the police, there will be more similar operations here in Negros,” 15IB Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. Erwin Cariño, was quoted to have said in the release.

“With the active help of the local populace, the CPP-NPA Terrorist will be suppressed and defeated.”
