BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – Iconic Filipino folk singer-songwriter Freddie Aguilar fired back at dominant local party Grupo Progreso whose spokesman had earlier blasted him over the song he wrote for GP rival party Team Asenso’s mayoral candidate Albee Benitez.

“They can do whatever they want and I will do whatever I want,” Aguilar told DNX when he was sought for comment over the weekend.

Some of Aguilar’s songs like “Anak (Child),” “Ipaglalaban Ko (I Will Fight For It),” and “Bata Sa Negros (Children of Negros),” have not only become seminal but anthems like in the case of Anak that became almost like a rallying cry for the island in the 80s when children starved as sugar prices dropped to rock-bottom levels in the United States market.

This time, however, Aguilar’s song, posted 2 April on a social media page of Benitez, sparked a controversy when GP spokesman Chris Sorongon released a statement days later, saying the song, which he said was entitled “Wakasan ang Krimen,” can be considered “fake news.”
