Yanah Grace L. Trangco, a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering freshman from the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos topped the 26th Philippine Statistics Quiz Provincial Elimination held at the President’s Hall of the said university on November 4,
2022.

The Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) returned after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid19 pandemic. Twenty-one college freshmen from seven colleges and universities in the province competed in the two (2) tightly contested rounds with each round having ten questions. The cumulative scores at the end of the two rounds resulted in a triple tie with scores of 17 points apiece among contestants Trangco of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, Rafael Gabrielle B. Arcolas of the Technological University of the Philippines-Visayas, and Nash U. Encarnacion University of the Saint La Salle.

UNO-R’s Trangco capped the championship with a correct answer in the first question of the tie-breaker round. The hotly contested battle for the first runner up was determined on the sixth question of the round, wherein USLS’s Encarnacion broke the tie and emerged as first runner up while TUPV’s Arcolas came in second runner up.

As the Provincial Champion, Trangco received a specially designed plaque of recognition and a cash prize of Php 5,000.00. She was coached by Mr. John Lewis Pabilona. Encarnacion and Arcolas also received a specially designed plaque of recognition and a cash prize of Php 3,000.00 and Php 2,000.00 for the first and second runner ups, respectively. Encarnacion was coached by Mr. Chard Aye R. Alova while Arcolas was coached by Mr. Joenilo A. Duran.

The winners were confirmed by the board of judges, namely Mr. Richel Gumban of Saint Joseph School-La Salle, Mr. Reginald Hudierez of the Department of Trade and Industry, and as chair, Dr. Jessamine S. Calma of Negros Occidental High School.

Negros Occidental will represent to the Regional Championship on November 14, 2022 hoping to defend the title up to the National Finals on December 6, 2022 in Metro Manila.

Chief Statistical Specialist Luis O. Gonzales, stressed the importance of timely, accurate and reliable data in evidence-based policy and decision making.

The PSQ is an annual quiz organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) geared to test college freshmen’s knowledge in Statistics. Among its objectives are to assess the competency and skills of students in statistics as acquired from the secondary education curriculum; to promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of science, statistics in particular, among the students; and, to generate public awareness on the importance of statistics in all development-planning activities and win overall support for all government
statistical activities.
