Civil society group bucks “illegal” rate increase of CENECO

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – The Freedom from Debt Coalition chapter here will take urgent steps in opposing the recent 50 centavo rate hike, which it called as “illegal.”

Priscilla Goco, FDC provincial secretary general, said the utility firm’s increase, which takes effect this month of May, is 53 centavos across three types – residential, low voltage and high voltage – and will lead to per kilowatthour rates ranging from a low of P9.43 for high voltage, P10.70 for low voltage, and P11.192 for residential.

Goco told DNX the rate increase did not go through the usual process, which involves filing a petition with the government’s Energy Regulatory Commission, the holding of public hearings, and allowing oppositors to air their position.
