The purpose of art has been a subject of debate since, well, the first art movement was created.
Should it be created just for the sake of it — l’art pour l’art – no justification, political, ideological, practical, and social purpose except for its own appreciation?
Or should art be created for a loftier goal: to celebrate life, to mirror realities, to feed the starving artist, or to educate and inspire the beholder?
Nonoy Etabag, Sr. clearly falls into the second category.
Tall, wiry, bearded, with an swarthy almost earthy complexion, Nonoy’s background as a revolutionary, and political figure has been documented by news reports, accounts of his alliance with a group of individuals raging against the system.
But while other tibaks and revolutionaries have taken up pens, placards, and even guns to show their dissent, Nonoy has taken to art to using his paintbrushes to create artworks that are at once visually striking, politically-laden, and discomfiting in its depiction of harsh realities.
