136 quakes: Capitol to meet with PHIVOLCS on tremors on Kanlaon’s flanks


BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – Capitol officials will meet today with the local chief of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology and will issue soon an advisory for towns and cities near the foothills of an active volcano hereafter at least 81 quakes were felt on its “west lower flanks” since early this morning, a government service agency had reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported on its website that a total of 136 quakes were recorded as of 8am today, 22 June by its observatories here, the last occurring at 6:14am, with tremor strength ranging one magnitude to four.

The agency added that four of these quakes – 1:01, 1:04, 1:34 and 2:06am – were recorded at Magnitude 3.2 to 4.7

The PHIVOLCS earthquake intensity level defines Magnitude 3 as “weak” and Magnitude 4 as “moderately strong.”

The quakes came amid the continuing Alert Level 1 status placed over Mt. Kanlaon since last year.

Phivolcs said the alert level means Kanlaon is at an “abnormal” condition with a four-kilometer permamemt danger zone around it.

Capitol executive Zaephard Caelian told DNX they will issue appropriate guidelines for the towns and cities at the foothills of the volcano after he meets with the local head of PHIVOLCS.

Caelian, who heads the Provincial Disaster Management and Prevention Department, said he was informed by the local PHIVOLCS head that the quakes were tectonic in origin, which means that this could have been caused by shifting faultlines and not by volcanic activities.

Kanlaon is defined as a “stratovolcano” and one of the most active in the country.

A stratovolcano, also called a composite volcano are the taller and steeper kind of volcanoes, the United States Geological Service said in its website.

The name also refers to the stratified nature of the volcano, that is it is built by layers of hardened lava, ash, and stones.
