City Hall warns three hospitals for improper disposal of hazardous wastes

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – The city government here has given final warning to three hospitals in this city for improperly disposing hazardous waste to sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa.

Department of Public Services head Nelson Sedillo said he met with the pollution control officers of the Coazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH), Riverside Medical Center, and Bacolod Adventist Medical Hospital to serve their final warning and discuss the problem on improper disposal of hazardous waste.

Sedillo said he will forward the matter to Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) if the said hospitals continue to commit their wrongdoings.

The city’s garbage hauler, IPM Construction and Development Corporation, had clarified from the hospitals thatthey only pick up residual waste sealed in a black bag, while those medical hazardous waste sealed in a yellow bag are taken by a third party contractor.

The IPM pollution control officer has reported that yellow bags containing medical waste such as surgical face masks, syringe, personal protective equipment (PPE), and dextrose hose, among others were found to be included in black bags from the said hospitals.

In a radio interview, Victor Yansay, project engineer of IPM said he has recommended to the hospitals the hiring of additional personnel and having them undergo orientation on the proper collection and disposal of hazardous waste so as not to commit the same violation.

Sedillo has ordered all the hospitals here to issue certifications that the garbage collected by the IPM contain no hazardous waste.

The three hospitals have assured that the hazardous waste from them were disinfected before they are collected by the garbage hauler.
