BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines — Hundreds of people were forced to leave their homes while classes were suspended and boat trips were canceled as a low pressure area brought heavy rains in Negros Occidental.
Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson ordered the suspension of classes in all levels from 12 to 13 January 2023 as heavy rains flooded certain areas into the province.
Meanwhile, all trips of sea vessels from the port of San Carlos bound for Port Toledo according to San Carlos disaster risk reduction management office. Twenty-four passengers and 12 rolling cargoes were stranded.
Cadiz, meanwhile, appears hardest hit in terms of the most number of people affected, with 222 families or 702 individuals affected in nine barangays (villages).
The barangays most affected are Tinampaan with 166 people affected, and Daga with 160 people affected.
Sagay, meanwhile, has five barangays affected with 44 families or 135 people.
Barangay Old Sagay has the most number of families with 20 (or 54 people), with barangay Paraiso coming next with nine families (37 individuals), and Bulanon with nine families (23 people).
Bago as of press time has 22 families affected with 22 families or 76 people in three barangays (Dulao, Atipulan, Sagasa).
Candoni has 107 people evacuated (41 families), while Talisay has eight. One house was also totally damaged by a landslide in barangay San Fernando.
Another landslide was reported in Sagay, although there is no official word yet on the details from the DRRMO.
Road clearing operations were conducted to get rid of debris and boulders that were scattered along the road.
Mudslides were also reported in Zone 12 of the Ecotranslink Highway, and as of 2 pm yesterday, clearing operations were being conducted.
