Bacolod, 25 others under Signal No. 1 as Paeng strengthens; all boat trips suspended

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines — Bacolod and 25 other towns and cities in Negros Occidental have been placed under Storm Signal Number 1 as Tropical Storm Paeng (international name Nalgae) gains strength, according to the latest advisory by state weather bureau Pagasa.

Cities and towns placed under Signal Number 1 in the province are Bacolod, Sagay City, Cadiz City, Escalante City, Manapla, Enrique B. Magalona, Victorias City, Silay City, Talisay City, Murcia, Bago City, Pulupandan, Valladolid, La Carlota City, La Castellana, San Enrique, Pontevedra, Hinigaran, Moises Padilla, Isabela, San Carlos City, Don Salvador Benedicto, Calatrava, Toboso, Binalbagan, and Himamaylan City.

As of press time, LGUs in areas affected by the rains brought by Paeng are conducting rescue and relief operations.

Flood waters from the torrential rains had caused rivers to swell, and water levels to rise.

The Victorias City Information Page has announced as of press time that water levels in Malihao River, a major tributary in the city, are fast approaching the 12-foot spilling level.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard Western Visayas District suspends all boat trips from six ports in Negros Occidental as Signal No. 1 is hoisted over parts of Negros Occidental province and Bacolod City.

In Hinobaan town, on the other hand, the spokesperson of Mayor Daph Reliquias, Eric Tenerife, tells DNX the local disaster unit, the Dial DAPH emergency center has coordinated with the Philippine Coast Guard and other agencies to look for Maximino Geronggay, 69, the fisherman who went missing almost a week now.

Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez meanwhile extends the suspension of classes while Victorias Mayor Javi Benitez issued an order suspending work in all government offices and classes in all levels.
