BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – Negros Island members of the House of Representatives — seven from Occidental, three from Oriental, and Abang Lingkod Rep. Stephen Paduano — condemn the attack by New People’s Army guerrillas against the 303rd Infantry Brigade.

The representatives, in a statement, called the attack against the soldiers “deplorable”. The soldiers were members of the 94th Infantry Batallion of the 303rd IB who were on security patrol in Sitio Tugas, in the village of Carabalan in Himamaylan last 19 April, 2020.

Three troopers were killed, and four others injured.

“Confirmed reports indicate that the government forces were ambushed. [T]he army vehicle suffered from a landmine blast and grenades were thrown at the soldiers,” the statement said.

It was not, the statement said, an encounter as claimed by the NPA spokesman.

“We condemn the treacherous and cowardly attack against the soldiers who were in the area to assist distribution of the social amelioration program to beneficiaries affected by COVID 19 — a clear violation of the unilateral ceasefire agreement,” the statement said, adding, “As we express our deepest sympathy to the families of the fallen soldiers, we recognize the heroism of all our soldiers who are among the selfless frontliners in the fight against COVID 19 and for keeping the peace in Negros Island.”
