A parade of white elephants: Gamboa says he still opposes projects that “waste money”

BACOLOD CITY – Lone opposition Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr. does not share the optimism of Mayor Evelio Leonardia that the “golden age” of infrastructure here starts this year.

“I maintain my stand that I am not for projects that are a waste of money,” Gamboa told DNX in reaction to the upbeat post New Year declaration of Leonardia that infrastructure projects will have an upsurge this year, starting with the twin coliseum-museum projects in Tangub village worth P2 billion.

“We don’t need white elephants.”

The solon, who ran under the Monico Kabuhi Ko alliance of former solon Monico Puentevella, is the lone survivor in the 2019 polls.

Leonardia’s Grupo Progreso swept 14 out of 15 local elective positions, from representative to members of the city council.

Gamboa said while he does not oppose the city securing loans from banks to finance local projects, he opposes those that are less needed by the city.

He pointed out that instead of being spent on the museum-coliseum, money will be better spent on a city hospital or satellite markets in villages or the renovation of three major public markets.

“The loans are not ours, it is people’s money and should be spent wisely,” the solon added.
