Jason lurks: Today is Friday the 13th

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines — It’s Friday the 13th!

People who have the fascination for symbols, numbers, and omens would have been checking their calendars now and realized it is Friday the 13th, that day that the superstitious find unlucky.

National Geographic in its official website says there is no solid proof as to the origins of the Friday the 13th being considered unlucky, although it is likely that the roots could be religious.

The number 13 has always been associated with back luck. Judas Iscariot, one of the original 12 Apostles, was believed to be the 13th to sit at the table (although this is not supported by canon).

Triskaidekaphobia is described as the fear of the number 13.

All over the globe, the number 13 has been treated as unlucky. Buildings often skip the 13th floor and proceed to 14th after the 12th.

In certain malls, there are no Aisle 13 or Counter 13.

Some people even outright cancel plans when the date falls on the 13th.

Whatever the reasons may be, there is absolutely no evidence that more accidents or misfortunes happen during Friday the 13th.

The superstition surrounding the number 13 and in fact Friday the 13th has been so ingrained in people’s subconscious that a whole horror franchise has been built around it involving a machete-wielding madman (or mad woman according to the first film) wearing a hockey mask.

It is, however, common sense to stay safe and keep safe no matter which day it is.
