Aaron Bais, executive assistant to Mayor Albee Benitez, said plans were originally made in 1993, close to 30 years ago, and are being implemented only now, the Bacolod City Public Information Office quoted him as saying.

The operations, initiated by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), seek to prevent floods during heavy rains, a problem residents of the said areas have been reportedly long suffering from.

The office added this was because of Benitez considered the matter an urgent concern.

The Benitez administration had earlier said results of the operations in the prioritized areas would be expected 10 days up to one month from now.
