Residents complain versus deadly fumes

BACOLOD CITY – Residents of an urban subdivision here are hoping for City Hall’s swift action on a complaint they have filed against the owner of a vehicle repair shop or talyer for the burning of industrial wastes and the fumes coming from metal welding.

“The smoke and fumes from welding and burning waste enters our homes and pollutes the air; these fumes are very harmful for the health as they may lead to respiratory ailments and even cancer,” a resident of Topaz Street said in her letter to Mayor Evelio Leonardia on July 30, and in a separate letter to village chief Lady Gles Gonzales-Pallen.

She said the operation of the shop owned by Raymus Alusnos is illegal since City Heights Subdivision is a residential area.

The complainant said Pallen had already acted on her complaint and had sent her representative to Alusnos to “warn them verbally a few times. Pallen had also sent Alusnos a letter on July 20 to request him to stop the operation of his shop.

The warnings, however, seem to “have fallen on deaf ears,” the complainant added.
